On Translating Juan Rulfo

Juan Rulfo (1917-1986) was a Mexican novelist and short story writer, whose work had a profound influence on his contemporaries, including García Márquez. His remarkable short story collection El Llano en llamas (1953) centre on life in rural Mexico after the revolution.

Translator Stephen Beechinor will be discussing his new translation of this collection, El Llano in flames, with Professor Michael Cronin. They will discuss Rulfo’s influence as a writer, the motives and aims of this translation, the first complete translation into English outside the US, some translation issues and stylistic choices, the editorial process and small press publication.

Stephen Beechinor is a graduate of Trinity College. He translates from Spanish and Catalan. This is Stephen’s first book-length translation.
