The Indigenous Interpreter®: A Training Program for Indigenous Interpreters Available to All

No one disputes the need for trained, indigenous language interpreters in community and legal settings. Many small programs have popped up over the years, that have been hard to scale and replicate. With the publication of The Indigenous Interpreter® training manual and workbook in 2019, a 60-hour, 21-module training program designed to target and overcome specific barriers to the interpreting profession and skill acquisition by indigenous interpreters is available. This presentation by one of the training’s lead creators and authors will walk you through the development, recruitment and implementation process required to bring this program to life. Major lessons learned during the program’s creation will be shared, along with concrete strategies for developing trainings for indigenous interpreters and the real-life positive impact for members of indigenous communities.
