This seminar – to be led by Sophie Llewellyn Smith – will provide with an introduction to online interpreter training, and will include a practical component as well as a discussion of good practice and basic principles. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions, exchange experience, and try out the format.

The seminar will comprise four main parts:

— A discussion of key aspects of online interpreter training, including differences between in-person and distance training, feedback, and technology.

• One-to-one online training.

• Online group sessions.

Trainer: Sophie Llewellyn Smith has been both a staff interpreter at the European Commission’s DG SCIC and a freelance conference interpreter. She has led several ToT seminars at DG SCIC, delivered retour training for UN and EP interpreters, and regularly runs workshops on retour, note-taking, and stress management. She is currently a visiting lecturer at the Universities of Leeds and Manchester, where she teaches consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, and a busy online coach. Sophie is the founder of Speechpool, a site for interpreting students to exchange practice material, a regular contributor to ORCIT (Online Resources for Interpreter Training). and a blogger on her site

Participants should be practicing conference interpreters and trainers of conference interpreters.

Sponsorship of Interpreter Trainers

AIIC Training will sponsor 4 interpreter trainers to attend this seminar. The sponsorship grant will cover an economy return airfare (upon presentation of a valid ticket) up to a maximum of CHF 1000.

Applicants should have their professional address outside Europe and be able to demonstrate that they are practising conference interpreters, who regularly teach conference interpreting. Attendance at, or organisation of, interpreting-related training events will also be looked upon favorably. AIIC members and non-members may apply.

Trainers applying for sponsorship should also register for the course at the link above if they intend to attend the course with or without sponsorship. Trainers whose participation depends on the award of sponsorships need only apply for the sponsorship.
