Workshop: Collaborative translation technologies

This one-day workshop will provide translation professionals, students and teachers a solid theoretical and practical knowledge of digital translation platforms and will highlight best practices in collaborative translation.

Throughout the workshop the tutors will identify the benefits and drawbacks of working on/for digital translation platforms and how to get the best value from them.

During the workshop, you will gain the foundational knowledge required to understand the purpose of collaborative translation, and how various collaborative scenarios can be facilitated and managed by platforms such as Protemos, Smartcat or Zanata. The scenarios will be based on how to:

  • Handle large volumes of translation requests within tight deadlines
  • Work collaboratively in localization/post editing/transcreation lifecycle (team building, project organization, linguistic engineering, translation production etc.)
  • Keep track of costs and profits on digital platforms
  • Ensure data protection while working on digital platforms

Speaker Biographies:

Joanna Gough is a lecturer in Translation Studies at the University of Surrey, UK. Joanna’s research interests encompass a variety of language and technology related subjects, such as innovative workflows, tools and resources for translators, process-oriented translation research and many more. Joanna is also interested in the business and industry aspects of translation and is a keen advocate of cooperation between academia and industry. She is involved in the ITI Professional Development Committee.

Gökhan Fırat has been working in the language industry for almost ten years in various roles. After completing his undergraduate education in Translation Studies, he worked for various publishing houses as an editor, copy-editor and book translator. Spending five years in the publishing industry, he switched careers and began working as a project coordinator, operations manager, technology consultant and trainer for translation and localisation companies. Currently he serves as BDM at Localex and is responsible for partnering with production and IT teams to align project goals with business strategy, improving operational efficiencies by streamlining communications and automating routine tasks and collaborating with company departments to develop new strategies for emerging client and market trends.

He is interested in the role of digital economy in translation business and its relationship with the transformations in the language industry. He completed his MA in Translation Studies with a thesis covering digital translation platforms and also translated a number of books into Turkish language, including A Christmas Carol (Charles Dickens), Making the Future (Noam Chomsky), The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes, “His Last Bow”, (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, ed. Leslie S. Klinge).

Selçuk Özcan has ten years of experience in the language industry and has worked for various language service providers as a Linguist, MT/QA Lead and Localization Trainee. Being a technology enthusiast, he was also one of the founders of Transistent Language Automation Services.

As a Localization Engineer, Selcuk supports Localex Team in the localization/post-editing processes, from the preliminary steps (linguistic engineering) to the last ones (QA and preparing files for delivery) and is mainly responsible for building high quality production models including custom MT systems to reduce production costs, turnaround times and increase productivity.

Selcuk holds two degrees, one in Mechanical Engineering and the second in Translation Studies, and has a keen interest in linguistics, NLP, language automation procedures, agile management and technology integration. He lives in London and lectures on Computer-aided Translation and Total Quality Management at various universities and industry events.
